Accessibility Statement

Ujima should work for everyone. Here is what we do and how to reach us.

Last updated: October 13, 2026

Our Commitment to Accessibility

Accessibility shapes how we build Ujima, and the work is ongoing.

We have not had an independent accessibility audit yet. Below is what we aim for and check as we build.

What We Aim For

Keyboard Navigation

We aim for every interactive element to be reachable and usable without a mouse.

  • A "Skip to main content" link is the first thing you reach with Tab on every page
  • Links, buttons, forms and menus are built from native or ARIA-aware components
  • We aim to keep focus indicators visible on every control

Screen Reader Support

We use semantic HTML and ARIA labels so the site makes sense when read aloud.

  • Page landmarks (header, main, footer) and a logical heading order
  • Alt text on the images we publish; owners are asked to describe the images they upload
  • Labels on form fields and icon-only buttons

Visual Accessibility

We aim for readable text and sufficient contrast in both light and dark mode.

  • Colour contrast chosen with the WCAG AA guideline in mind
  • Text that scales with your browser zoom and font-size settings
  • Meaning is not conveyed by colour alone

Motor Accessibility

We aim for generous click targets and spacing so controls are easy to hit.

  • No time-limited actions
  • Spacing between interactive elements
  • Forms that explain errors and let you fix them

Standards We Work Toward

These are targets, not certifications:

WCAG 2.1 Level AA

We use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA as our target. We have not completed a formal audit yet.

ADA

We work to make Ujima usable by people with disabilities in the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Assistive Technologies

We build with standard web technologies so that Ujima works with common assistive tools. If yours is not working well with the site, we want to hear about it.

Screen Magnifiers

Built-in OS magnifiers and browser zoom

Screen Readers

VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS, TalkBack

Alternative Input

Keyboard-only use, voice control, switch access

Browser Extensions

High contrast modes, text spacing tools

Known Limitations & Ongoing Work

Some parts of Ujima are not yet as accessible as we want them to be:

  • The interactive map is a third-party component with limited keyboard and screen reader support; the same businesses are always available in the list view
  • Images uploaded by business owners may lack descriptive alt text
  • Some animated transitions do not yet respect the "reduce motion" setting
  • We have not yet verified every control against a formal touch-target size

We are working through these and will update this page as they are resolved.

How We Check

As we build, we aim to:

Run automated checks with browser tools such as Lighthouse and axe to catch common issues.

Try new pages with the keyboard alone and with a screen reader before they ship.

Act on reports from people who use the site, which catch what tools miss.

Feedback & Support

If you hit an accessibility barrier on Ujima, or have a suggestion, please tell us:

We read every accessibility report and will get back to you. If you cannot access some content or feature, let us know and we will work with you to provide an alternative.
