Privacy Policy

How we collect, use and protect your information.

Last updated: October 23, 2026

Our Commitment to Privacy

At Ujima, we believe in transparency and trust. We collect only the information necessary to provide you with the best experience while maintaining the highest standards of data protection and privacy.

This Privacy Policy applies to all services provided by Ujima, including our website and any related services. By using Ujima, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, Clerk, our sign-in provider, collects your name, email address and either a password or your Google sign-in. We keep your name, email address and profile photo. Business owners may add a business name, address and contact details.

Things You Choose To Do

We keep the actions you take on Ujima: businesses you save, reviews, check-ins, RSVPs, tickets, orders and messages you send to a business. Business pages keep a simple count of views with no record of who viewed them.

Search Suggestions

As you type in the search box, the words are sent to Ujima's own server to fetch matching businesses and categories. They are used for that request only and are not stored.

Messages You Send Us

When you send a contact, feedback or support message, we record your IP address and browser type alongside it so we can spot abuse. The same IP address is held for a short time to limit how many messages one connection can send.

Location Data

On the Discover page your browser asks whether to share your location. If you accept, the coordinates are used to sort results by distance and are not stored. If you check in at a business, the coordinates you share at that moment are kept with the check-in.

What We Do Not Collect

We do not record keystrokes, mouse movements or screen sessions, and we run no advertising or session-replay tools. We use Google Analytics to count visits and pages viewed, with ad features off and private links stripped first. Apart from the search suggestions above, nothing you type is sent anywhere until you press submit.

How We Use Your Information

Platform Services

We use your information to provide, maintain, and improve Ujima's services, including personalized recommendations and search results.

Communication

We may send you service-related emails, such as account notifications, business updates, and community newsletters (which you can opt out of).

Safety & Security

We use your information to protect against fraud, abuse, and security threats to keep Ujima safe for everyone.

How We Protect Your Data

Encryption

All data transmitted to and from Ujima is encrypted using industry-standard SSL/TLS protocols.

Access Controls

We implement strict access controls and authentication measures to protect your personal information from unauthorized access.

Code Review

We review the code for security issues, keep dependencies up to date and limit which outside services the site is allowed to talk to.

Your Rights & Choices

Access & Update

You can access and update your personal information at any time through your account settings.

Data Deletion

You have the right to request deletion of your account and associated data. Contact us at [email protected] to exercise this right.

Marketing Opt-Out

You can opt out of marketing communications while still receiving important service updates.

Third-Party Services

Ujima uses third-party services to provide certain features, such as:

  • Clerk - sign-in, accounts and session cookies
  • Stripe - card payments for tickets, plans and pickup orders
  • Resend - delivers account, event and newsletter email
  • Cloudflare Turnstile - the bot check on the contact, feedback and support forms
  • Cloudflare R2 - stores photos and logos you upload
  • Vercel - hosts the site; its request logs include your IP address for a limited period
  • Sanity - stores our blog content and holds no personal data about you
  • OpenStreetMap - map tiles on the Discover page, which your browser fetches directly from their servers

Each of these receives only what it needs to do its job for us and handles that data under its own privacy policy. We do not sell or share your information for advertising.

Cookies & Tracking

We set the cookies needed to keep you signed in and to keep forms safe from bots, and Google Analytics sets cookies that count visits and pages viewed (Google signals and ad personalisation are off). We do not run advertising pixels or session-recording tools, and we do not record what you type. The full list is on our Cookie Policy page.

You can refuse cookies in your browser settings. Signing in will not work without them, but browsing the directory will.

Children's Privacy

Ujima is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can take necessary action.

Changes to This Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.

You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Changes to this Privacy Policy are effective when they are posted on this page.
