The Beautiful Game: our World Cup celebration

Georgetown Playfield, Seattle

Seattle hosted the FIFA World Cup, and we were part of it. Through June and July we cheered at watch parties, fan zones and the stadium, then hosted our own Post World Cup Beautiful Game Wellness Extravaganza, funded by Seattle Parks and Recreation. A party bus streamed the matches to the field, a professional coach ran drills for every age, and the Zimbabwe flag flew over Georgetown Playfield.

Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo plays our Independence Day

Park celebration, Seattle area

The Lion of Zimbabwe himself, creator of chimurenga music, performed for our community at one of our Zimbabwe Independence Day celebrations in the park. Elders who grew up on his songs sat with him in Mukanya T-shirts: a living link between the music of Zimbabwe’s independence and the families who carry it here.
